Georges Newsletter Nov 2019
October marks the end of our summer outdoor season, and two of our longest-running competitions, both over thirty years old, take place at the start and end of the month. Our Two-Way Longbow/Barebow, Albion/Windsor, attracted thirty archers. Two-way shooting needs extra concentration, reading the different wind directions and working out aiming points at both ends of the field. This attracts increasing numbers to this competition. We had an enjoyable day, with five new club records and two new county records for our members – congratulations to Robin Carter, Carrie Mortimore, Jodie Hayde, Jane Burton and Lee Waterfield. We were all very pleased to have our Chairman and judge, Mario Stankovic, back shooting with us after a two-year layoff.
The very wet weather at the end of the month caused us problems on the field when over a hundred archers and visitors came to our Annual Pie and Beans Western Competition. The two days of continuous rain just before the shoot made preparations difficult – Norwood Park Golf Club kindly allowed us the use of their carpark, otherwise we would have needed a tractor to pull cars off the field, and they also gave us the use of a buggy to carry archers’ equipment up to the field.
Moving twenty-five targets across a soggy field is hard work, but thanks to a huge bale of straw, curtesy of Mr Tim Butler, our field manager, Jason Millard, made a “yellow straw road” that made things a lot easier. We were lucky to have a fine,if cold windy day for the shoot, and everyone enjoyed the shooting, and the pies! Our members Carrie and Andy Mortimore [longbow] and Callum Fuller [jnr compound] won gold and Stephen Lamb [recurve] won bronze. Altogether a great day to end the season.
Indoor shooting for the winter has got off to a good start, with records being broken at 20 yards already, notably a county and regional record-breaking score for 5 dozen arrows with longbow by Carrie Mortimore. Scores are improving week by week.
Monthly “Frostbites” and Clouts give members an opportunity for outdoor shooting on the field every fortnight, come rain, shine or snow.
