Georges Newsletter Feb 2019
At the start of the month, we hosted the Notts Archery Society’s Indoor Championships. The three sessions were a sell-out, with a total of 120 archers taking part. Our Secretary, Susan Stankovic, was the Organiser, and Chairman Mario Stankovic was Judge-in-Charge. Our members shot well, and seven of them finished in medal-places: Jenny Bryan,1stLady Compound; carrie Mortimore, 1stLady Longbow; Ron Pickering,1stGent Longbow; Andy Mortimore,3rd Gent Longbow; Jodie Hayde,2ndLady barebow; Megan Purchase, 3rdLady Barebow and Lukus Cole, 1stJunior barebow.
Last week, we heard From Southwell Lions that our swimmers, David, Oliver and Nathan Salmon, and Dean and Eric Burton had won the Lions Swimathon for the fourth year, by raising most money for the Lions. Well done,Team Sherwood.
I’ve reported on our Club Clouts before, and on the second Sunday in the month we held our first Open Clout Shoot, a double metric, one-way event, at flag-distances ranging from 185 metres for compounds down to 75 metres for juniors. We were amazed, and very pleased to receive entries from 70 archers, some travelling from as far away as Luton. We were very grateful to Mr.Tim Farr and Mr.Tim Twidale for allowing us to shoot on their land at Kirklington,as our field is not quite long enough for metric clouts. The shoot was organised by Susan Stankovic, and Mario Stankovic and Mike Thomason were judges in charge of the shooting .Heavy rain beforehand made car-parking difficult, but luckily, the rain stopped just as shooting began, and from then on the weather was dry and sunny. Once again, our members were amongst the medal-winners: Mark Burton,1stBarebow; Stephen Lamb,3rdBarebow; David Salmon, 3rdRecurve; Oliver Salmon,1stJnr Recurve; Ethan Lamb,1stJnr Barebow; Carrie Mortimore,1stLady Barebow, and Ashley Buckland, 2ndLady Compound and an arrow in the flag-stick at 165metres.Between them they claimed 17 records at club, county and regional levels, and as a result 6 of them will be shooting for the county in the Inter-Counties Clout at Kettering, next month.
The February Frostbite was shot near the end of the month, on a misty/foggy morning with springtime temperatures. 26 members took part, and winners were;Darren Lowe [recurve]; Alex Atkins [compound]; Carrie Mortimore [longbow]; Jason Millard [flatbow]; Jodie Hayde [barebow]; Lukas Cole [jnr barebow] and William Burnett [jnr recurve]. Shooting was to such a good standard that 6 records were set and 9 archers improved their handicaps.
The Frostbite was followed by the AGM. 27 members attended and heard reports for 2018 before voting for the Executive Committee and the Club Officers. Thanks were expressed by the Chairman and the President for all the time and energy put into the running of the club by our members.
