Georges Newsletter Aug 2021

Over the past two months activity on the archery field has returned to near-normality. Members and visiting archers are encouraged to use social-distancing, and a record of who is on the field is still kept, but otherwise we are able to shoot as usual. Club-nights are attracting increasing numbers, and we are shooting our monthly short-distance Warwick round and our Club Clout is gaining popularity every month. Our members have been shooting in open competitions at other clubs, and our Records Officer Is kept busy keeping the Club Record Book up to date as they submit their scores.

Once again we hosted the English and Open Longbow Championships for Archery England. This attracted longbow archers from across the country, and we are now regarded as the regular venue for this national competition.

Our Summer Beginners Course was held in July. These courses are the way into archery as a sport for adults and juniors, and are recognized by all archery clubs as proof of good, safe training when new archers apply for membership. The four sessions that make up our course, cover all the aspects of archery that a “new”archer needs, and once  they have joined the club, they have the help of our coaches to improve their skills. Until they are ready to buy their first bow ,we have a bow rental scheme which is used by many of our beginners.

At the end of July, we provided a Have-a-Go at the Minster Fun Day. In spite of the showers , over 50 children and adults shot a “proper’ bow for the first time, and those six arrows  are often the first step to a Taster Session, or perhaps a Beginners Course.

When we were able to use the field again after the lock-down, there was, once again, increased interest in the Taster Sessions. These are arranged for family groups, birthdays, clubs and societies,  corporate groups, etc, providing a concentrated session of shooting ,led by our coaches, and are always enjoyed.
